Civvie to Solider in 98 days

Civvie to Soldier was taken at ATR Bassingbourn. I photographed 95 new recruits on their first day, before being issued with equipment and having the obligatory haircut. I then returned 14 weeks later to the same dormitory, prior to the Pass off parade to photograph the 70 soldiers who had completed the “Soldier Initial (Phase 1) Training” programme.

Before being accepted into a regiment, all British Army recruits are required to undergo this programme, a training course that produces individuals suitable for the discipline and routines of army life.

During this course, all participants undergo physical and educational examinations. They are taught Fieldcraft, (how to live and fight in the field), Skill at Arms and are introduced to a 5.56mm rifle, Fitness Training, Military Knowledge to help understand their own role and those of the unit they have chosen to join, Battlefield Casualty Drills, Individual Health and the six core values of Army life.

1. Courage Be brave enough to do the right thing, no matter what the circumstances
2. Discipline Set a good example and follow lawful orders
3. Respect for others Treat people as you’d want to be treated
4. Integrity Be honest and never lie, cheat or steal
5. Loyalty Look after your mates and stick with them, even when the going gets tough
6. Selfless commitment Put the team, your mates and the mission before yourself
